The Archives of the French Jesuits: Sources for writing history
The Jesuit archives of France reflect the activities of the Society of Jesus and are a unique source for writing its history. With a volume of almost 3 kilometres, they contain documents produced or received by French Jesuits from 1558 to 2024. Rich in information, their contents cover the full range of their activities (administration, schools, missions, works, etc.). The presentation will first provide a general overview of the organization and contents of the Jesuit archives of France. It will later highlight archival sources concerning the Jesuit missions in India.
Barbara Baudry is a researcher specializing in the study of Jesuit archives and overseas missions, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa between 1946 and 1976. Currently attached to the French-speaking Western European Province of the Society of Jesus, she is responsible for managing and promoting the Jesuit archives in France. Her work covers a wide range of subjects, including Catholic missions, the Africanization of the clergy in colonial and post-colonial contexts, and religious history, in particular missionary practices and their socio-cultural impact. She also contributes to colloquia and publications in religious history and archivistics. Her research often integrates an interdisciplinary approach to study the complex historical dynamics of religious institutions.
Historia Domus is a research network that investigates the history of the Jesuits from a South Asian perspective. It brings together a collaborative database that collates resources for research on the Jesuits, as well as on Christianity in South Asia.
